Make a Tallow Candle

Tallow candles burn clean, slow and warm — a lovely weekend project that shows off just how versatile real fat is.

Ingredients

  • 250 g Tallow & Flame beef tallow
  • 1 cotton candle wick with a base tab
  • A clean glass jar
  • A pencil or skewer to hold the wick
  • Optional: a few drops of essential oil

Method

  1. Gently melt the tallow in a heatproof bowl over simmering water until fully liquid.
  2. Anchor the wick tab in the centre of the jar and rest the pencil across the top to hold the wick upright.
  3. If using, stir a few drops of essential oil into the melted tallow.
  4. Pour the tallow into the jar and leave to set completely at room temperature (a few hours).
  5. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before lighting.

Chef's tip

Let it cure for a day before the first burn for a cleaner, longer-lasting flame.
