Make a Tallow Candle
Tallow candles burn clean, slow and warm — a lovely weekend project that shows off just how versatile real fat is.
Ingredients
- 250 g Tallow & Flame beef tallow
- 1 cotton candle wick with a base tab
- A clean glass jar
- A pencil or skewer to hold the wick
- Optional: a few drops of essential oil
Method
- Gently melt the tallow in a heatproof bowl over simmering water until fully liquid.
- Anchor the wick tab in the centre of the jar and rest the pencil across the top to hold the wick upright.
- If using, stir a few drops of essential oil into the melted tallow.
- Pour the tallow into the jar and leave to set completely at room temperature (a few hours).
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before lighting.
Chef's tip
Let it cure for a day before the first burn for a cleaner, longer-lasting flame.
